Seasonal influenza 2010
The 2010 vaccination program is now in full swing with ProVax nurses busier than ever before, in every capital and regional centre of Australia. Coming so soon after the one-off ‘Swine Flu’ vaccination program in late 2009, some have questioned the need for another vaccination. The answer lies in the composition of the annual vaccine, determined every year by the Australian Influenza Vaccine Committee.

The seasonal influenza vaccine contains killed viral particles, which will induce protection against three strains (two A and one B) of influenza. The viral particles are selected according to predictions of influenza strains, which are expected to be in circulation in the year ahead. The 2010 vaccine contains particles, which resemble
- A/California/7/2009 (H1N1),
- A/Perth/16/2009 (H3N2) and
- B/Brisbane/60/2008;
the first providing added protection against the ‘Swine Flu’.

Swine Flu and Seasonal Flu
All who have received the 2009 ‘Swine Flu’ vaccine (‘Panvax’) are encouraged to boost their protection with the 2010 seasonal vaccine and, at the same time, gain protection from other circulating strains in the cooler months ahead.

Experts predict a return visit of ‘Swine Flu’ to Australia, possibly with increased virulence and morbidity.

It is important to remember that people with the influenza virus can spread the infection before any symptoms appear.
